A Café, a Conversation and a Common Need
In 1999, Troy Stremler (founder and CEO of Newdea) sat at a café in Puna, India with five American couples. They’d spent the morning at a clinic in one of the worst slums in Puna where an aboriginal group was providing medical treatment to children and families — all on a meager $73,000 budget.
While speaking with the couples, who were major donors to Mission Builders (the international outreach ministry where Troy formerly served as CEO), a common thread unraveled in the conversation: After seeing firsthand how their dollars were making a positive change, the donors all wanted to support more programs like the one they experienced earlier that morning. How could they continue to see ongoing results from the programs they fund and remain inspired and committed long after their visit?
The Challenge: Use Information to Achieve Social Impact
The couples challenged Troy to ponder the question: How can nonprofits restore donors’ joy and confidence in giving and generate the greatest impact for those who need it most?
After four years of research and listening to the industry’s voiced need for a standard, Troy started an on demand software company that would enable nonprofits and others to effectively manage programs toward impact and communicate program-level information and metrics to donors and grantors. And just like that, “Newdea” was born.
